Generation Dead – Daniel Waters ***

So… I guess I lied when I said that I was going to upload this review on Friday.

But I’m here now. Let’s talk about this book, shall we.
I first heard Catriona rave about it when she was recreating the cover for a challenge. I’ll be honest.. I’m not sure if I would have picked it up if I hadn’t seen that video. The prospect of just another teen/fantasy/paranormal/romance story wasn’t very appealing. But I trust Catriona, so I took him home.

What is this book about? Well, let me tell you.

For some reason, there are teenagers in America who die only to come back.. as zombies. They are not your braaaiiiiins kind of zombies. They are like other teenagers only slower, paler and, you know, dead…

Phoebe, who is alive, develops an interest for Tommy, who died but came back.. but not everyone is happy with the returned. Threats are made and carried out. And then there’s Adam who is in love with Phoebe but who can’t find a way to tell her.

This book had a lot of potential. The zombies as a minority with all the difficulties that minorities today have to face, was a great idea.. but.. I feel like it was only touched upon briefly and then forgotten.

As for the romance.. It was like the zombies (excuse me living impaired).. slow and awkward. I wished there was something epic coming but it never happened. In a way, I’m happy that it wasn’t a silly love story. The problem here was that the other characters were constantly hinting at a romance but Phoebe isn’t sure and they aren’t really friends either. They just hang out a couple of times. It was as if they were supposed to be friends but they never managed it. I don’t know, it didn’t feel right.

I enjoyed the book because it was fast and easy and quite okay in the end. But I’m still not sure if I want to read the other books in this series. Some people really like them but I’m just not convinced that it will get better. Maybe if I come across another copy by chance, I’ll buy it anyway.. we’ll have to wait and see.

I guess I just wanted more but not in the way that you crave more when you’ve read a really good book. I wanted more details, suspense, romance. It just wasn’t enough.

I’m glad that there are people who’ve loved this book and I wish I was one of them.

See you soon.
